Thoughts & Observations
on Glass, Design & Process

The evolution of an idea, a design, and ultimately the creation of a finished window is the most satisfying and rewarding part of the art glass experience.

Design/Concept Ideas

First, I am continually collecting ideas for panels. The iPad is my favorite tool for storing ideas. E-folders are created to save project photos, design sketches and construction notes. Of course not every thought leaves the iPad to become a project, but it's an endless source of inspiration.

Secondly, I have made a hobby of collecting interesting sheets of glass.
It's exciting to incorporate the distinct character of a special sheet into a project.
A single sheet of glass has often become the genesis for a panel.

Lastly, I believe that every panel is the maquette (model) for the one that comes next. This is growth.

Ultimately, it's not so much what you do, but that you do that is most important.

Working with the Client

Every facet of the design process is important and enjoyable. The construction of a commissioned panel starts with conversations to discover what the client has in mind. The ultimate objective is the creation of a panel that can be appreciated and lived with for a long time.

We start with knowing where and in which direction the panel will hang -
North, South, East, West - for the play of light during different times of day can dramatically change the appearance of glass.

Craftsmanship and Execution

After the project has been defined and the design agreed upon, the practical execution begins. Pieces of glass are meticulously cut to the pattern and then wrapped in lead or copper foil. Lastly, comes a tedious cleaning and polishing. The end result is stunning. The collaborative effort from concept to finished product is most rewarding. The idea has come to fruition.
